The History of Reiki
Palm Healing, or Reiki, was developed in Japan in 1922. Dr. Mikao Usui claimed to have climbed Mt. Kurama to do penance. After twenty-one days, he experienced a spiritual awakening and had acquired the Reiki cure. It is said he used it on both himself and his family with each session bringing immediate results. He moved to Tokyo later that year and began teaching it publicly. He is said to have saved many people from a 1923 Kanto earthquake using his Reiki technique. A woman by the name of Hawayo Takata brought the technique to the United States in 1937. Since then, the number of Reiki practitioners in the world has grown to over four million with one million Reiki Masters.

Reiki is based on the idea that living beings have a life force energy flowing through them at all times. This energy is often called qi. Two Major Traditions of Reiki
Reiki practice is split into two different branches. The first is Traditional Japanese Reiki. It refers to the exact system that Usui used in Japan during the 1920s. Many specifics were lost during and after World War II when there was conflict between Japan and the United States. However, in 1993 there was a resurgence of the technique and several different systems were established. There is also a Usui Reiki Healing Method Learning Society that is said to practice Usui’s original style in private.
The second of the two branches of Reiki practice is Western Reiki. Its existence is attributed in no small way to Hawayo Takata. Even though Takata was originally trained in Japanese Reiki, the events of World War II brought great tension between the two nations. Takata changed the practice to make it more understandable to the western world. The main difference between Traditional Japanese and Western Reiki is that the latter has a predetermined set of hand placements while the former relies on intuition.
